Privacy Policy
Last updated: April 1, 2026
The short version: Screen Rest processes everything locally on your Mac. We don't collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Your break habits, stats, and preferences never leave your device.
Who We Are
Screen Rest is a macOS application developed and published by Screen Rest ("we", "us", "our"). This privacy policy explains how we handle information in connection with the Screen Rest app distributed via the Apple App Store.
Information We Collect
Screen Rest is designed with privacy as a core principle. We collect the minimum data necessary to provide and improve the app:
Data processed locally on your device
- Break statistics — break counts, streaks, skip counts, and weekly activity. Stored in local UserDefaults on your Mac. Never transmitted.
- Preferences — your chosen break interval, theme, sound settings, smart pause configuration, and app lists. Stored locally. Never transmitted.
- Smart detection signals — Screen Rest detects fullscreen state, microphone activity (to detect meetings), system idle time, and keyboard activity. These signals are processed in real time on-device and are never recorded or stored.
Data collected by third-party services
- Purchase data (via RevenueCat) — When you purchase Screen Rest, the transaction is processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat, our subscription/purchase management provider. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase history (product purchased, transaction date, price) for the purpose of validating your purchase and unlocking the app. RevenueCat does not receive your name, email, or any other personal information. RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
- App Store data (via Apple) — Apple may collect analytics data related to your use of the App Store, crashes, and app usage as described in Apple's Privacy Policy. You control this in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.
Data We Do Not Collect
We want to be explicit. Screen Rest does not collect, access, or transmit:
- Your name, email address, or any contact information
- Your location data
- Your browsing or search history
- The content of your screen, files, or documents
- Audio from your microphone (we only detect whether it is active)
- Your keystroke content (we only detect whether you are typing)
- Health or fitness data
- Advertising identifiers or tracking data
- Data from other apps on your Mac
How We Use Information
The locally stored break statistics and preferences are used solely to:
- Manage your break timer and display your stats
- Generate your weekly eye health report (displayed locally)
- Maintain your streak and break history
- Configure smart pause behavior
The purchase data processed by RevenueCat is used solely to validate your purchase and unlock the app.
Third-Party Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third party for marketing, advertising, or data mining purposes. The only third-party service that receives any data is:
- RevenueCat — receives anonymous purchase data for transaction validation. RevenueCat is contractually obligated to protect this data and uses it only to provide their service.
Data Retention & Deletion
All local data (break stats, preferences) is stored on your Mac and persists until you:
- Reset your stats within the app's preferences
- Delete the Screen Rest app from your Mac
Uninstalling Screen Rest removes all locally stored data. Purchase records managed by RevenueCat and Apple are retained according to their respective retention policies and applicable law.
To request deletion of any data associated with your anonymous purchase record, contact us at the email below.
Permissions
Screen Rest may request the following macOS permissions:
- Accessibility — required for the global hotkey (Option+Command+B) and keyboard activity detection. Screen Rest does not read, record, or log any keystrokes.
- Screen Recording — optionally used for the blur mode feature, which captures and blurs your current screen as a break overlay background. The capture is processed locally in memory and is never stored or transmitted.
Children's Privacy
Screen Rest does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app does not require account creation and does not collect any personal information from any user.
International Users
Screen Rest processes all data locally on your device. No data is transferred internationally. If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or United Kingdom, the GDPR applies to any personal data processing. Since Screen Rest does not collect or transmit personal data, the app is compliant by design.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
